Eco-TIRAS

International Association of River Keepers is the association of more than 50 environmental NGOs of Moldova, including the Transdniester region, and Ukraine, concerned with the safety and sustainability of the transboundary Dniester River basin and is registered under Moldovan legislation.

Eco-TIRAS promoted the Dniester River basin treaty (2012) and is presented in the river commission, also deals with environmental legislation, promotes integrated river basin management, public participation in decision making, environmental education, and monitoring. It relies on scientific expertise in its activities.

Eco-TIRAS is active in the processes and committees of the Water and Aarhus Conventions and is a member of the European Environmental Bureau.

Ecosystem services and hydropower

Joint project of Eco-TIRAS (Moldova – the project leader), National Environmental Center of Ukraine, Ornithological Society of Azerbaijan and NGO “Khazer” (Armenia) “Ecosystem services and hydropower: pilot application of European tools in the river basin of the EaP countries”. The project was carried out in 2020-2021 under the EaP Civil Society Forum Grant Scheme (FSTP) and is funded by the European Union and produced the analysis and assessment of the impact of hydropower on the ecosystems of rivers of EaP countries. The analytical paper has been produced and published.

HydroEcoNex

Project BSB165 “Development of an innovative system for transboundary monitoring of Black Sea ecosystem changes under the impact of hydropower development and climate change – HydroEcoNex” is funded by the EU Black Sea regional cooperation programme from 2018 to 2021. The Institute of Zoology study with four partners from Moldova, Romania and Ukraine assesses the impact of hydropower on the Black Sea rivers Dniester and Prut. Eco-TIRAS is responsible for environmental education, international conference and creation of the methodology to assess the impact of HPP on river ecosystems. It produced the methodology, organised the youth summer school, the expedition and the international conference. The impact of HPP on rivers runoff and ecosystems is assesed. 10 scientific articles and books have been published, from them 3 – in indexed journals.

Assessment of amateur fisheries on fishery resources in the Lower Dniester

“Assessment of amateur fisheries on fishery resources in the Lower Dniester”, 2019-2020, supported by the OSCE. The first joint work of ichthyologists from Moldova, Transnistria and Ukraine in monitoring amateur fisheries in the Lower Dniester, shared by Moldova and Ukraine. The project resulted with data that in total, over the course of a year, fishermen in the Lower Dniester catch about 547 tonnes of fish. The data was presented by species and published, as well as the booklet on the Lower Dniester red data book species.
